Help with the work in front of you

Large group process mentor

Use my guidance on choosing, designing, and facilitating large group processes in your own AI conversation.

If you followed a link to the original bespoke ChatGPT, this is the mentor's new home. The instructions below offer a portable way to work with the material in an assistant of your choice.

Start with your situation

The useful question is what needs to happen, who needs to be involved, and what they can actually change. The mentor instructions help an AI assistant explore that with you, compare approaches, and challenge a proposed design.

  1. Copy the instructions below. Paste them into a new conversation in your preferred AI assistant.
  2. Add the situation you are working on. Include the purpose, the people involved, what is open to change, the constraints, and the help you want.
  3. Ask it to read the sources. The instructions link to the method register and teaching materials. If your assistant cannot open them, download the files from the source links below and upload them to your conversation. Ask it to say what it has actually read.

This is a starting prompt grounded in my public materials. Its usefulness depends on the sources your assistant can read and the context you provide. Check its suggestions against the source material and your own judgement, including any specialist requirements for a method.

A few useful ways to begin

After pasting the instructions, try a question like one of these. Add the details that make it your situation.

Decide whether a large group process would help
'We need to make progress on [issue]. Here is who is involved and what can change. Would a large group process help? What would we need to do before bringing people together?'
Compare approaches
'Compare three approaches for this situation. Explain what each could achieve, the preparation it needs, and what could make it a poor choice.'
Challenge a design
'Here is our proposed agenda. Who is missing? What decisions are really open? Where could participation have little influence? What needs to happen afterwards?'
Work out the next move
'We are in the session now, and [describe what you can observe]. Suggest a practical next move, what to watch for, and when we should pause.'

Keep the source material close

The main large group processes page is the starting point for the collection. It brings together the method index, teaching deck, and shared documents, with source and page references.
